Después de unos meses volvemos con una entrevista. Ya teníamos ganas. Os presentamos a WITNESSES y detrás de todo está el multi-instrumentista Greg Schwan, que con unas magníficas colaboraciones es capaz de crear en conjunto grandes sonidos. Desde que descubrimos a WITNESSES no hemos perdido su pista. Las pruebas están en su colaboración con un tema para nuestro último recopilatorio, y nuestra reseña de su ep "Holy Water" que podéis leer aquí. Vamos a lo que importa. Os dejamos con la entrevista a Greg Schwan y su proyecto WITNESSES.


Como primera pregunta, me gustaría que explicaras a un músico sin experiencia, cómo sería el proceso de crear una banda con colaboraciones. Qué ideas tiene que tener claras, qué busca en la otra persona y cómo es esa sensación que os conectará como músicos para crear un disco.
- Esta es una gran pregunta, una de la que disfruto hablar y discutir. Realmente no sabía lo que estaba haciendo cuando empecé, pero probablemente eso fue muy liberador. Creo que realmente la clave es tener una visión. Con eso me refiero principalmente a grandes rasgos. Creo que a menos que tengas una armonía muy precisa, por ejemplo, simplemente debes decirles a los músicos de sesión la sensación, el ambiente y la energía que deseas, y ellos cumplirán. Salvo algunas excepciones en las que tenía algo muy específico en mente, así es como trabajo con los músicos de sesión. Puedo contar los cambios con una mano. Esto no fue por nada malo, sino más bien porque no lo tenía suficientemente claro la sensación que quería para “esa” sección específica. En cada caso, el siguiente intento fue perfecto. Solo requería un poco más de explicación. Desde un punto de vista técnico, también debes de asegurarte de comunicarte con tus músicos de sesión en torno a cosas como el headroom, el correcto procesamiento de las pistas (básicamente no en todo, con algunas excepciones), etc. Además, págales bien. Si tienes los medios para añadir un plus, hazlo. Esta mierda siempre vuelve.

Relacionado con el tema anterior de la pregunta, ¿cuándo fue el primer momento en el que decidiste buscar otros músicos para darle vida a WITNESSES?
- De inmediato. Y eso es porque cuando empecé sabía que nunca habría una banda. Simplemente no quería eso, y todavía no lo quiero. Solo quería escribir y grabar. Además hay que añadir que lo primero que necesitaríamos en Nueva York es un espacio para ensayar. Con solo pensarlo, duele. Así que al instante comencé la búsqueda de músicos de sesión. ¡Oh, además no canto una mierda! Así que esto siempre va a ser una colaboración. No voy a aprender en estos momentos.

Esta es una pregunta que me gusta dejar fija en las entrevistas para conocer un poco a la persona que hay detrás del músico. Siempre pregunto: ¿te gusta la lectura? Si es así, ¿lees libros en general, cómics, novelas gráficas…? Si estás leyendo o acabas de finalizar alguna lectura, ¿me podrías decir el título? ¿Alguna recomendación para los lectores?
- Sí, me encanta leer, y desearía tener más tiempo para ello. Libros y cómics, definitivamente. En cuanto a los libros estoy más interesado en la “no ficción” en este momento. Hace poco leí los libros de Josie Riesman sobre Stan Lee y Vince McMahon, ¡Muy bestia! También “Myth America” de Kevin Kruse. En cuanto a la “ficción”, acabo de adquirir uno de los libros recientes de Cormac McCarthy, pero aún no me he sumergido. Para los cómics, creo que algunos de los escritores más emocionantes en este momento son BKV, G. Willow Wilson, Jason Aaron y Donny Cates. Hay montones de grandes artistas (particularmente mujeres como Fiona Staples, Jenny Frison, Jen Bartel, etc.), pero te quedas para la historia, ¿me entiendes? De todos modos, algo curioso: se suponía que el primer álbum de Doom se llamaría A “Game of You”, como un tributo a The Sandman. Sin embargo, lo hice solo como una canción.

Para ti, qué es WITNESSES más allá del significado literal de la palabra.
- El nombre no significa mucho para mí, más allá de lo obvio de su significado. Creo que el nombre solo necesita sonar genial. Misterioso, tal vez. ¡Así que nada más interesante hay en este tema!

Qué es lo mejor que las podido dar a WITNESSES que sea parte de tu interior.
- Lo siento si entendí mal la pregunta (Nota: tranquilo, lo has entendido al 100%), pero por la forma en que la interpreto, hay muchas cosas personales que salen en la música. Quizás una de las experiencias que más me ha marcado fue la pérdida de mi madre. Se hace referencia muy, muy a menudo. “Everything is Worse”, en un single que hice, que pasó desapercibido, trata sobre esto. El título de esa canción, es en realidad del episodio de “Bojack Horseman” donde elogia a su madre. Fue perfecto. También mi esposa, mis gatos, todo está allí. El EP “The Poltergeists I” tiene quizás mi canción más personal, que trata sobre la medicación que he tomado para controlar mi salud mental. Muy personal, y muy explícito. Mi amor por el cine también está reflejado. Toneladas y toneladas de referencias. ¡Espero que encuentres algunas!

¿Te gustaría realizar algún concierto con WITNESSES para presentar tus novedades o ya has realizado alguno?
- A pesar de mi odio por estar en una banda, sí, una actuación sería genial. Pero, honestamente, tengo mucha ansiedad por el rendimiento que supondría estar en el escenario, así que probablemente estaría jodido todo el día, solo de pensar en ello. Las probabilidades de que suceda son casi cero.

Desde la creación de WITNESSES. ¿Qué es lo que sigue siendo perpetuo en tu música que hoy podemos ver reflejado en tus últimas publicaciones?
- Quiero seguir haciendo algunas cosas. Quiero seguir trabajando con historias. “Doom II” y “The Collapse” cuentan historias a lo largo de todo el álbum. Supongo que eso se llama un "álbum conceptual", pero siempre lo asocié con tonterías realmente pomposas. Son solo historias. También quiero continuar con letras introspectivas, pero evitando los clichés lo mejor que pueda. Y a pesar de algunas imágenes aquí y allá, realmente no quiero tratar con la “religión organizada” muy explícitamente. Quiero decir que podría deslizarse con sutileza, pero no sería un tema importante. No sé qué más hay que decir sobre ese tema. Muchas bandas de metal todavía están rehusando ese terreno.
¿Qué detalles nos podrías adelantar de tu próximo lanzamiento?
- Será de metal. Con las otras caras de WITNESSES tengo más cosas por preparar, pero no ahora. Todavía tengo mucho que decir en la vena del metal. Me gustaría que esta vez la guitarra tuviese más protagonismo, no en términos de mezcla, sino en riffs más interesantes y complejos. Hacer algunas cosas más llamativas. Nada exagerado, pero al menos algo. Este lanzamiento será otro EP, por cierto. Me gustan los EP porque se sienten como un gran lugar para experimentar y probar cosas nuevas. Temáticamente, será un tipo de álbum de metal muy diferente. Se tratará de la recuperación y la autoaceptación, volver a uno mismo. Se llamará “Joy”.

## INTERVIEW: WITNESSES ##

After a few months we return with an interview. We already wanted. We introduce you to WITNESSES and behind it all is the multi-instrumentalist Greg Schwan, who with some magnificent collaborations is capable of creating great sounds together. Since we discovered WITNESSES we haven't lost track of them. The evidence is in his collaboration with a track for our latest compilation, and our review of his ep "Holy Water" which you can read here. Let's go to what matters. We leave you with the interview with Greg Schwan and his WITNESSES project.


As a first question, I would like you to explain to an inexperienced musician what the process of creating a band with collaborations would be like. What ideas do you have to have clear, what are you looking for in the other person and what is that feeling like that will connect you as musicians to create a record.
- This is a great question–one that I enjoy talking about and discussing. I really didn't know what I was doing when I started, but that probably was liberating. But I think the key is really to have a vision. And by that I mostly mean in broad strokes. I think unless you have a very precise harmony you want for example, you need to simply tell session players the mood, vibe, and energy you want, and they will deliver. Barring a few exceptions where I had something very specific in mind, this is how I work with session players. I can count the redos on one hand. And this wasn't because of anything bad, but more because I wasn't clear enough on the mood I wanted for the section. In each case the next attempt was perfect. It just required a little extra explaining. From a technical standpoint, you also need to make sure you communicate with your session players around things like headroom, processing the tracks properly (basically not at all with some exceptions), etc. Also, pay them well. If you have the means to add a tip, do it. This shit comes back around.

Related to the previous topic of the question, when was the first moment you decided to look for other musicians to bring WITNESSES to life?
- Right away. And that's because when I started I knew there would never be a band. I just didn't want that, and still don't. I just wanted to write and record. I mean right out of the gate in NYC we'd need some practice space. Just sounds like a pain. So right away the search was on for session players. Oh, also, I can't sing for shit! So that's always going to be session. I'm not going to learn at this point.

This is a question that I like to leave fixed in interviews to get to know the person behind the musician a bit. I always ask: do you like reading? If so, do you read books in general, comics, graphic novels…? If you are reading or have just finished reading, could you tell me the title? Any recommendations for readers?
- Yes, I love reading, and wish I had more time for it. Books and comics, definitely. For books I'm mostly interested in non-fiction at the moment. I recently read Josie Riesman's books on Stan Lee and Vince McMahon–wild stuff! Also Myth America by Kevin Kruse. Fiction-wise, I did just pick up one of the recent Cormac McCarthy books, but haven't yet dove in. For comics, I think some of the more exciting writers at the moment are BKV, G. Willow Wilson, Jason Aaron, and Donny Cates. There are gobs of great artists (particularly women like Fiona Staples, Jenny Frison, Jen Bartel, etc.), but you stay for the story, you know? Anyway, funny bit: the first doom album was supposed to be called A Game of You, as a tribute to The Sandman. I made it just a song instead, though.

For you, what is WITNESSES beyond the literal meaning of the word?
- The name doesn't mean all that much. I think a name just needs to sound cool. Mysterious, maybe. So nothing really interesting on this topic!

What part of your interior have you offered a WITNESSES?
- I'm sorry if I misunderstood the question, but the way I interpret it, there are a lot of personal things that come out in the music. Perhaps one of the most formative experiences for me was the loss of my mother. It's referenced very, very often. Everything is Worse, a pretty overlooked single I did, is about this. The title of that song is actually from the episode of Bojack Horseman where he eulogizes his mother. It was perfect. Also my wife, my cats, it's all there. The Poltergeists I EP has perhaps my most personal song ever, which is about medication I've taken to manage my mental health. Very personal, and very explicit. My love of film is also on display. Tons and tons of references in there. I hope you find some!

Would you like to perform a concert with WITNESSES to present your news or have you already done one?
- Despite my hating being in a band, yeah, a performance would be cool. But honestly I have a lot of performance anxiety, so I'd probably be fucking miserable the whole day and on stage. So I'd say odds of it happening are about zero.

Since the creation of WITNESSES. What is it that remains perpetual in your music that today we can see reflected in your latest publications?
- I want to continue doing a few things. I want to keep working with stories. Doom II and The Collapse both tell stories across the whole album. I guess that's called a "concept album", but I always associated that with really pompous nonsense. They're just stories. I also want to continue with introspective lyrics, but avoiding clichés as best I can. And despite some imagery here and there, I don’t really want to deal with organized religion very explicitly. I mean it could slip in, but wouldn’t be a major theme. I don’t know what else there is to say on that topic. So many metal bands still are retreading that ground.

What details could you tell us about your next release?
- It’ll be metal. With the other sides of Witnesses I have more stuff coming, just not now. I still have a lot more to say in the metal vein. I’d like this one to bring the guitar a bit more forward–not in terms of the mix but in terms of the riffs and doing some more interesting stuff. I mean, not terribly much, but at least some. This release will be another EP, incidentally. I like EPs because they feel like a great place to experiment and try new things. And thematically, it’ll be a very different type of metal album. It’ll be about reclamation and self-acceptance–getting back to oneself. It’ll be called Joy.
