Lo mejor para saborear los primeros días del otoño y casi finalizando septiembre, es una nueva entrevista en Doom In Aeternum. Hemos tenido la oportunidad de mandar unas preguntas a Jan y Sabine. Los dos grandes y contundentes pilares de GRIN.


Cuales son las diferencias existentes en cada uno de los discos que habéis lanzado que hagan de ellos únicos a su manera?
- J: Nuestro primer álbum, "Revenant", estaba destinado a ser muy crudo y sin pulir, también fue un álbum que escribimos y grabamos en solo unos días. Funcionó bien en ese entonces y amamos ese disco, pero ciertamente es un álbum al que cuesta un poco acostumbrarse. En "Transluncent Blades" entramos en muchos más detalles, en cuanto a la composición de canciones. Todo suena más complejo, más vivo, más denso y también bastante psicodélico. Llevamos eso aún más lejos en "Phantom Knocks".

Esta es una pregunta que me gusta hacer a todas las bandas con las que hablamos. Soy amante de la lectura, me gusta saber si con quien hablo también tiene la misma pasión o no. Sea libro, cómic, novela gráfica u otras formas, ¿estás leyendo alguna cosa en la actualidad? ¿Me dirías alguna frase destacada, o momento que te haya gustado?
- S: Personalmente, me encanta leer biografías y libros de viajes. El último libro de vacaciones fue "Just Kids" de Patti Smith, que trata sobre su amistad con Robert Maplethorpes. Una oda realmente agradable a la subcultura de la Nueva York de los 70 y al amor por el arte y la vida. "El collar siempre ha pasado entre nosotros a lo largo de los años. Quién podía poseerlos dependía de quién los necesitaba más. Nuestro sentido de los signos secretos se manifestó en muchos pequeños rituales. Uno se llamó día uno - día dos. Realmente solo consistía en el hecho de que uno de nosotros siempre tenía que estar en forma. Si yo estaba mal, él tenía que estar bien. Si uno estaba enfermo, el otro estaba sano".

Qué esencia creéis que GRIN hace llegar a los oyentes con su música?
- J: “GRIN te llevará en un viaje oscilante a través de cambiantes paisajes desérticos extraterrestres mientras tu espíritu vuela alto en una odisea mística a través del plano astral”. No podría describirlo mejor que en nuestro comunicado de prensa. :)

S: Especiales vibraciones de música y sonido para los amantes del arte. Creo que lo entiendes viendo los videos de las canciones lanzadas.

Después del tiempo que ha pasado desde el lanzamiento de vuestro primer disco "Reverant", y llegando a lo que será "Phantom Knocks", vuestro esperado nuevo álbum, qué creéis que ha cambiado. ¿Existe alguna evolución en el sonido, en la manera de expresaros comparándolo con lo que ya está publicado?
-J: Siempre hay una cierta evolución dentro de una banda cuando pasa cierto tiempo, al menos así debería ser. Sin embargo, cuando se trata de nosotros, todavía puedes escuchar que es la misma banda, la misma sensación interior y espíritu.

¿Qué sensaciones se os crearon en el primer momento cuando se decidió volver a preparar un nuevo disco?
- J: Por supuesto, siempre es genial cuando comienzas a escribir canciones para un nuevo álbum, pero como dirijo un estudio de grabación aquí en Berlín y grabar bandas es mi trabajo diario, es más un proceso gradual con GRIN en el que las ideas son simplemente grabado de vez en cuando y realmente no sabes si son solo 1 o 2 pistas al final o en realidad un álbum completo.

Ya habéis publicado dos temas de "Phantom Knocks", disco que estará disponible el 14 de octubre autopublicado con vuestro sello The Lasting Dose Records. Qué nos podéis contar de lo que podremos escuchar próximamente. Qué destacáis del disco.
- J: Phantom Knocks se puede ver más como una pista larga dividida en ocho rituales chamánicos individuales con elementos recurrentes y paisajes sonoros que permiten que todas las canciones se fusionen en una montaña rusa psicodélica gigante. Eso es definitivamente algo que nunca hemos hecho antes.

The Lasting Dose Records es vuestro propio sello y habéis editado todos los discos de GRIN. Qué nos podéis contar sobre el motivo de su nacimiento, cómo trabajáis y qué queréis hacer con él en el futuro.
- J: Eso no es del todo correcto, nuestro segundo álbum "Translucent Blades" fue lanzado por Crazysane Records, también un sello genial de Berlín. De lo contrario, sí, lanzamos el primer álbum y lanzaremos "Phantom Knocks“ y también lanzaremos el álbum debut de nuestra otra banda "Slowshine". En primer lugar, comenzamos nuestro pequeño sello solo por diversión y, además de eso, queríamos tomar nuestras propias decisiones sobre cuándo y cómo lanzar álbumes y otras cosas, sin compromisos. Todavía no sabemos exactamente si queremos hacer más con el sello en el futuro, si también sacaremos álbumes de algunas otras bandas, etc., pero en cualquier caso, ya estamos jugando con la idea.
En el tema de conciertos, cómo os va y si tenéis alguno próximamente.
- J: Tocaremos algunos conciertos más este año y luego nos encargaremos de los festivales y las giras para 2023.

Antes de finalizar, una última pregunta: ¿Qué es para vosotros "GRIN"? y qué huella personal dejáis plasmada como GRIN.
- J: Para nosotros, GRIN es más un proyecto de arte en el que experimentamos mucho más con el sonido y las imágenes que en todos nuestros otros proyectos. Es muy divertido, pero también mucho más desafiante ya que solo estamos nosotros dos.

- S: Nuestra diversión en dúo con batería y bajo :)

The best thing to savor the first days of autumn and almost ending September, It's to announce a new interview in Doom In Aeternum. We have had the opportunity to send some questions to Jan and Sabine. The two great and forceful pillars of GRIN. We leave you with the interview.

What are the differences in each of the albums you have released that make them unique in their own way?
- J: Our first album "Revenant“ was meant to be very raw and unpolished, and it was also an album that we wrote and recorded in just a few days. Worked well back then and we love that record but it's certainly an album that takes a little to get used to. On "Transluncent Blades" we went into much more detail, songwriting-wise. Everything sounds more complex, more vivid, thicker and quite psychedelic too. We took that even further on "Phantom Knocks".

This is a question I like to ask every band we talk to. I am a lover of reading, I like to know if the person I speak with also has the same passion or not. Be it book, comic, graphic novel or other forms, are you currently reading anything? Would you tell me any outstanding phrase, or moment that you liked?
S: I personally love reading biographies and travel books. Last book on vacation was Just Kids from Patti Smith which is about her friendship to Robert Maplethorpes. A reallly nice ode to the subculture of 70's new york and love to art and life.

"The necklace has always passed between us over the years. Who could own them depended on who needed them most. Our sense of secret signs manifested itself in many small rituals. One was called day one - day two. It really just consisted in the fact that one of us always had to be fit. If I was bad, he had to be fine. If one was sick, the other was healthy."

What essence do you think GRIN brings to listeners with their music?
- J: “GRIN take you on a rocking ride across shifting extraterrestrial desertscapes while your spirit flies high above in a mystic odyssey through the astral plane.” I couldn't describe it any better than in our press release. :)

- S: A special vibe of music and sound for art lovers. I think you get it by watching the videos to the song releases.

Since the release of your first album "Reverant", and reaching what will be "Phantom Knocks" your expected new album, what do you think has changed? Is there any evolution in the sound, in the way of expressing yourself compared to what is already published?
- J: There's always a certain evolution within a band when a certain amount of time goes by, at least that's how it should be. However, when it comes to us, you can still hear that it's the same band, same vibe and spirit.

What sensations were created in you at the first moment when they returned to prepare a new album?
- J: Of course it's always great when you start with the songwriting for a new album, but since i run a recording studio here in Berlin and recording bands is my day job, it's more of a gradual process with GRIN in which ideas are simply recorded from time to time and you don't really know if it's only 1 or 2 tracks at the end or actually an entire album.

You have already released four songs from "Phantom Knocks", an album that will be available on October 14 self-published with your label The Lasting Dose Records. What can you tell us about what we can hear soon. What stand out from the album?
- J: Phantom Knocks can be seen more as one long track divided into eight individual shamanic rituals with recurring elements and soundscapes that allow all the songs to merge into one giant psychedelic rollercoaster ride. That's definitely something we've never done before.

The Lasting Dose Records is your own label and you have released all the GRIN albums. What can you tell us about the reason for its birth, how you work and what you want to do with it in the future.
- J: That's not entirely correct, our second album "Translucent Blades" was released by Crazysane Records, also a cool label from Berlin. Otherwise, yes, we released the first album and we will release "Phantom Knocks" and also released the debut album of our other band "Slowshine". First of all we started our little label just for the fun of it and besides that, we wanted to make our own decisions when and how we release albums and other stuff, without any compromises. We still don't know exactly whether we want to do more with the label in the future, whether we will also release albums from some other bands and so on, but in any case, we're already toying with the idea.

On the subject of concerts, how are you doing and if you have any coming soon.
- J: We'll be playing a few more concerts this year and then we'll take care of festivals and touring for 2023.

One last question: What is "GRIN" for you? and what personal imprint do you leave as GRIN?
- J: For us, GRIN is more of an art project in which we experiment a lot more with sound and visuals than in all of our other projects. It's a lot of fun, but also a lot more challenging as there's only the two of us.

- S: Our two-piece fun with drums and bass :)
