Antes de seguir con las preguntas, me gustaría agradeceros lo fácil y agradable que fue hablar con vosotros para la participación en nuestro último recopilatorio (diciembre, 2023). ¿Qué significa para vosotros el sonido de FALSE GODS? Qué hay de cada uno en la música.
- False Gods: Bueno, en primer lugar, "False Gods", el nombre, fue creado por Mike Stack. Su significado se basa en una misantropía de bajo nivel y una especie de comentario sobre la sociedad moderna. Con la llegada de las redes sociales, etc., la sociedad moderna tiende a pensar en sí misma como más de lo que realmente es. Ese tipo de vibra.

El "sonido" y su significado para mí, en particular, sería más difícil de describir. Los ''sonidos'' han ido evolucionando constantemente desde nuestros inicios. La forma en que escribimos canciones es típicamente: escribo toda la música, la arreglo con la banda y luego, una vez completa, se la envío a Mike para la letra y la voz. Supongo que el "sonido", para mí, es básicamente una forma de expresarme. Buscando constantemente. Superando continuamente las limitaciones de lo que somos capaces de hacer y nunca queriendo estancarnos, esforzándonos siempre por escribir mejores canciones. Además, ha habido una gran evolución con Mike y la forma en que hace las voces. No es solo un tipo de HxC, usa todas las partes de su voz. Ya sea el gruñido bajo que escucharás en "Phantasmawhoria", las melodías de "Stay Frosty" o el lamento de "An Eternity of Failure", no tiene miedo de correr riesgos y llevarlo al siguiente nivel.

Nuestro "sonido" tenía raíces en el mundo stoner/doom/sludge, pero nos hemos expandido a lo largo de los años para ser mucho más que eso. Es una amalgama de toda la música que nos ha inspirado. Realmente lo creo. No sé cómo etiquetarlo, así que creo que la mejor manera de categorizarnos sería llamarlo "slow metal". Estoy orgulloso del trabajo que hemos realizado y espero seguir haciendo música un poco descentrada y que desafíe el status quo de nuestra escena en la que nos han agrupado.

En el momento en el que se decide crear una banda de música, puede surgir al instante o se habla con tranquilidad construyendo unas bases sólidas para llegar a tener una idea principal de lo que uno quiere. ¿Cómo fue ese primer instante de FALSE GODS? Fue como una explosión su nacimiento o se fue construyendo poco a poco.
- False Gods: Mike y yo estábamos en una banda de stoner/doom llamada Skeletondealer con mi buen amigo Rob Lauritsen (From Autumn to Ashes). Lanzamos un ep de 4 canciones. Después de que terminara el proyecto, estuve haciendo demos de algunas canciones que eran básicamente canciones sobrantes de Skeletondealer. Se los mostré a Mike, le interesó y esas demos se convirtieron en "Wasteland", que es nuestro primer Ep. Eso fue en 2015.

Cuando empezamos esta banda estábamos metidos hasta las rodillas en ese mundo stoner doom y queríamos ser una banda que potencialmente pudieras ver en el Desert Fest o algo así. Ahora, realmente no podría decirte qué es. Hay tantas influencias diferentes, desde post-punk/hardcore hasta D-beat y death metal, sin dejar de ser lento, oscuro y fangoso. ¡Hemos creado un desastre! Todavía me alegro de hacerlo y desanimar a la gente. ja ja.

Si pudieras darte un consejo cuando descubriste la música, y sin que afecte en el tiempo, ¿qué te dirías?
- False Gods: No hagas de esto una carrera jaja. No lo sé, tal vez aprender más instrumentos. Realmente no sé que responder a esta pregunta. Esta pregunta se repite siempre en todas las entrevistas. Es una curiosidad. ¿Te gusta leer? Libros de cualquier género, novelas gráficas, cómics… O no eres de libros. Si estás leyendo ahora mismo alguna cosa, ¿Qué es? ¿Alguna recomendación?
- False Gods: Puedo leer pero no soy un lector. El último libro que leí fue "The Rat Pack", así que...

Cuéntame cómo es la escena musical de tu ciudad. ¿Es fácil organizar conciertos, hay movimiento de bandas? ¿Cómo es el ambiente?
- False Gods: ¡Muy saludable!
El mercado de la música, incluso el de la música heavy, es muy activo hasta el punto de que a veces parece inundado y es abrumador. Somos una banda de Nueva York (Long Island), así que obviamente es el mercado más grande para la música. Hay tantas bandas geniales que salen tanto de Nueva York como de casa que a veces puedes quedar atrapado en el vacío, pero sólo tienes que trabajar duro y luchar para superarlo. Además, hay mucha competencia, por lo que te obliga a afilar tu acero y estar en la cima de tu juego. A veces puede volverte loco pero, francamente, no hay ningún otro lugar donde preferiría estar. Creo que ser una banda de Nueva York definitivamente ha impactado la forma en que tocamos y sonamos. Hay una razón por la que tenemos todas estas influencias diferentes en nuestra música. Sin duda somos un producto de nuestro entorno.
El simple hecho de estar en el noreste de Estados Unidos definitivamente tiene sus ventajas. Podemos realizar giras y visitar los principales mercados sin tener que estar de viaje durante semanas o meses seguidos. Estoy muy orgulloso de ser una banda de Nueva York. Llevo esa mierda como una insignia de honor, jajaja.

Me gustaría destacar el split que habéis realizado con la banda japonesa Abiuro. Ahora mismo con Internet todo es más fácil y rápido, pero aún así me gustaría conocer cómo se inició esta historia.
- False Gods: De hecho, Abiuro se puso en contacto con nosotros y estaba interesado en incluir este split en su sello, lo que significa que ellos pagaron el arte y la fabricación de los CD. Lamentablemente, arruinaron completamente el lanzamiento y se ausentaron sin permiso justo antes de que saliera. No hemos sabido nada de ellos desde entonces. Fue muy decepcionante por decir lo menos, pero así son las cosas. No obtuvo la tracción que esperábamos, lo cual es una lástima porque estas dos canciones del lanzamiento, "0% Success Rate" y "Time Poisoning", son algunos de nuestros mejores trabajos hasta la fecha. Es lo que es. Tenemos muchas copias en nuestro bandcamp. Por favor, compruébalo si estás interesado.

Qué previsiones de futuro tiene la banda para este nuevo año. ¿Nuevo disco, conciertos, descanso…?
- False Gods: Actualmente estamos trabajando en nuestro siguiente álbum de "Neurotopia". He escrito alrededor de 9 canciones y les he mostrado una demostración para que Mike trabaje en ellas. Entonces todavía estamos en el proceso de escritura. Estaremos en el estudio este verano, probablemente a finales de julio. Espero que el disco salga en 2025. Tengo muchas ganas de publicar nueva música. Sé que esto suena muy repetitivo y cliché, pero este material más nuevo es lo mejor que hemos hecho jamás. Ha habido una gran evolución en nuestra formación, sonido y composición hasta el punto en que siento que hemos dado un salto cuántico en este disco. Es, por momentos, el disco más pesado, lento y melódico que hemos hecho hasta la fecha. No puedo esperar para compartirlo con todos ustedes.

En lo que respecta a las giras, para poder centrarnos en escribir y grabar este nuevo disco, no haremos tantas giras como lo hicimos en 2023. Tocaremos en un concierto único con el poderoso Will Haven en Brooklyn, Nueva York en abril y también haciendo una serie de espectáculos en todo el noreste en mayo. Eso es todo lo que puedo decirles en este momento en particular. Tenemos algunos hierros en el fuego y algunas otras cosas emocionantes que no puedo mencionar en este momento, pero definitivamente estamos ansiosos por volver a la gira, ver a todos los amigos y tocar en vivo. Eso es seguro.

## INTERVIEW: FALSE GODS ##

*Before continuing with the questions, I would like to thank you for how easy and pleasant it was to talk to you about participating in our latest compilation. I hope you liked it. Thank you! And for those who don’t know what I’m talking about, visit our bandcamp and enjoy listening to and downloading our 11th compilation for eleven years of Doom In Aeternum for free. Let’s go with the questions…

What does the sound of FALSE GODS mean to you?
False Gods: Well first off "False Gods", the name, was created by Mike Stack. Its meaning is based in a low level misanthropy and a sort of commentary on modern society. With the advent of social media etc modern society tends to think of themselves as more than what they really are. That kinda vibe.

The "sound" and its meaning to me, in particular, would be harder to describe. The ''sounds'' have been consistently evolving since our inception. The way we write songs is typically I will write all the music, arrange it with the band, then once complete it gets sent to Mike for lyrics and vocals. I guess the "sound'', for me, is basically a way for me to express myself. Constantly searching. Continually pushing the limitations of what we are capable of and never wanting to stagnate, always striving to write better songs. Also, there has been a great evolution with Mike and the way he does vocals. He's not just a HxC guy and uses all parts of his voice. Whether it's the low growl you'll hear on "Phantasmawhoria" the melodies of "Stay Frosty" or the lament of "An Eternity of Failure, he isn't afraid to take risks and take it to the next level.

Our "sound' had roots in the stoner/doom/sludge world but we've branched out over the years to be so much more than that. It is an amalgam of all the music we've ever been inspired by. I really do not know how to label it so I think the best way to categorize us would be to call it "slow metal'". I'm proud of the work we've accomplished and am looking forward to keeping making music that is a bit off center and challenges the status quo of our scene that we've been lumped into.

The moment you decide to create a music band, it can arise instantly or you talk calmly, building solid foundations to have a main idea of what you want. What was that first moment of FALSE GODS like? Its birth was like an explosion or it was built little by little.
False Gods: Mike and I were in a stoner/doom band called Skeletondealer with my good friend Rob Lauritsen (From Autumn to Ashes). We released a 4-song ep. After that project ended I was demoing some songs that were basically leftover skeletondealer songs. I showed them to Mike, he dug it and those demos became "Wasteland" which is our first ep. That was in 2015.

When we first started this band we were knee deep in that stoner doom world and wanted to be a band you could potentially see at like Desert Fest or something. Now, I couldn't really tell you what it is. There are so many different influences from post-punk/hardcore to D-beat and death metal while still remaining slow, dark and sludgy. We've created a mess! Still glad to do it and bum people out. haha

If you could give yourself advice when you discovered music, and without it affecting time, what would you tell yourself?
False Gods: Don't make this a career hahah. I don't know, maybe learn more instruments. I can't really answer that one.

This question is always repeated in all interviews. It’s a curiosity. Do you like to read? Books of any genre, graphic novels, comics… Or you’re not into books. If you are reading something right now, what is it? Any recommendation?
False Gods: I can read but I am not a reader. The last book I read was "The Rat Pack" so...

Tell me what the music scene is like in your city. Is it easy to organize concerts, is there movement of bands? What is the environment like?
False Gods: Very healthy! The market for music, even for heavy music, is very active to the point where at times it feels flooded and overwhelming. We're a NY band (Long Island) so obviously it is the biggest market for music. There are so many great bands coming out of both NYC and back home that you can at times get sucked into the void but you just have to work hard and fight through it. Also, there is a lot of competition so it forces you to sharpen your steel and be on top of your game. It can drive you crazy at times but, quite frankly, there is nowhere else I would rather be. I think being a NY band has definitely impacted the way we play and sound. There is a reason we have all these different influences in our music. We are most certainly a product of our environment.

Just being in the Northeast of the US definitely has its advantages. We can tour and hit major markets without having to be on the road for weeks or months at a time. I'm very proud to be a NY band. I wear that shit like a badge of honor, haha.

I would like to highlight the split that you have done with the Japanese band Abiuro. Right now with the Internet everything is easier and faster, but I would still like to know how this story began.
False Gods: Abiuro actually contacted us and was interested in putting this split out on their label which means that they paid for the artwork and the manufacturing of the CD's. Sadly, they completely botched the release and went AWOL right before it was to come out. We haven't heard from them since. It was very disappointing to say the least but that's how it goes. It didn't get the traction we had hoped for which is too bad because these two songs on the release "0% Success Rate" and "Time Poisoning" are some of our best work to date. It's what it is. We have plenty of copies on our bandcamp. Please, check it out if you're interested.

What future plans does the band have for this new year. New album, concerts, rest…?
False Gods: We are currently working on our follow-up album to "Neurotopia". I have written about 9 songs and have demoed them out for Mike to work on. So, we're still in the writing process. We will be in the studio this summer, probably by the end of July. Expect the record to come out in 2025. I am very much looking forward to putting out new music. I know this sounds very tired and cliche but this newest material is the best thing we've ever done. There has been a great evolution in our lineup, sound and songwriting to the point where I feel we have quantum leaped on this record. It is, at times, the heaviest, slowest and most melodic record we've done to date. I cannot wait to share it with y'all.

As far as touring goes, in order to focus on writing and recording this new record, we will not be touring as much as we did in 2023. We'll be playing a one-off gig with the mighty Will Haven in Brooklyn, NY in April and also doing a run of shows across the northeast in May. That is all I can tell you at this particular time. We got some irons in the fire and some other exciting things that I can't mention at this moment but we're definitely looking forward to getting back on the road, seeing all of the homies and playing live. That's for sure.
