Los que ya nos conocéis sabéis que el tema con las entrevistas nos lo tomamos con mucha tranquilidad, pero cuando queremos traeros una nueva lo hacemos con muchas ganas. Aquí viene, en pleno julio y para soportar un poco más este maldito calor, (nunca entenderé a quién le puede gustar el verano) la entrevista a DUST PROPHET. Os dejamos con lo que nos ha contado Otto Kinzel (Vocals/Guitar/Percussion).


¿Qué mensaje queréis dejar escrito entre líneas en un disco para que el oyente se quede atrapado y adicto a vuestra música?
- Otto: Queremos que el oyente tenga nuestros riffs y ganchos grabados en su cerebro, para que tenga que tararear nuestras canciones y tocarlas a todo volumen. No estoy seguro de que haya un mensaje específico, por así decirlo, sino que solo queremos que la música y las canciones tengan un impacto emocional en el oyente.

De Vuestro disco “One Last Look Upon The Sky” lanzado a finales de enero, ¿qué punto fuerte destacáis del lanzamiento?
- Estamos encantados con la respuesta que hemos obtenido hasta ahora desde el lanzamiento del álbum. Trabajamos con Curtis y Cori de C Squared PR durante el período previo al lanzamiento, e hicieron un trabajo increíble. Uno de los momentos de los que estamos más orgullosos es que el álbum debute en el número 13 de los Doom Charts de enero. Teniendo en cuenta que es nuestro lanzamiento debut y lo lanzamos de forma completamente independiente (autofinanciado y autoeditado), esta fue una confirmación de que la gente disfruta lo que hacemos. Se sintió genial ver a One Last Look Upon the Sky en las listas con varios otros lanzamientos increíbles.

¿Cuándo fue el instante, ese segundo donde se empezó a formar la idea de crear DUST PROPHET?
- Sarah (Wappler, bajo/teclados) y yo comenzamos Dust Prophet en 2019, pero tomó un poco de tiempo hacer que todo funcionara. No fue hasta el bloqueo de COVID que encontramos a Tyler (MacPherson, baterista) y finalmente obtuvimos algo de impulso. Una vez que Tyler estuvo a bordo, tuvimos una formación consistente y comenzamos a escribir y grabar. Jason (Doyle, guitarra) se incorporó a finales de 2022. Inicialmente iba a ser nuestro guitarrista en vivo, pero aportó una energía tan increíble a la banda que sabíamos que teníamos que tenerlo como miembro a tiempo completo.

Creo que leí en vuestra web que casi todos ya os conocíais antes de uniros para dar vida a DUST PROPHET. ¿Estuviste en alguna otra banda, sigues en ella o es DUST PROPHET la primera?
- Sarah y yo estuvimos en una banda industrial hace varios años. Así es como nos conocimos inicialmente. Cuando ese proyecto siguió su curso, decidimos intentar algo diferente. Le gustaba mucho la música basada en riffs, como el stoner y el doom metal. Así que ese fue el género en el que decidimos centrarnos. Conocimos a Tyler a través de mi amigo Bob Dwyer, que tocaba la guitarra principal en dos canciones de One Last Look Upon the Sky. Estábamos buscando un baterista. Hicimos audiciones a varias personas que simplemente no pudieron hacerlo. Estaba desahogándome con Bob sobre lo frustrante que era, y él simplemente dijo: “Oye, conozco a un chico que podría estar interesado…”. Él y Tyler trabajaron juntos y me puso en contacto con él.

Toqué en una banda con Jason hace más de 10 años, otra banda de metal industrial. Ese proyecto finalmente se rompió y Jason se dedicó a la producción musical y la ingeniería. Cuando llegó el momento de que alguien mezclara y masterizara el álbum, me acerqué a él. Quedamos muy impresionados con su trabajo, y en el transcurso de un año, naturalmente, se involucró más en la banda. Entonces, cuando decidimos que necesitábamos otra guitarra para los conciertos, él fue la primera persona a la que le preguntamos.

¿Qué ha sido lo más fácil y lo más complicado a la hora de componer las canciones del disco?.
- Complicado probablemente no sea la palabra correcta, pero lo más desafiante fue la multipista de diferentes estilos para las voces. Fue un desafío porque siempre estoy tratando de esforzarme. Quiero presentar siempre diferentes estilos y voces para cada canción. La mayoría de ellos los trabajé en la práctica antes de grabarlos, pero una vez que estoy en el estudio y tengo la oportunidad de grabar en múltiples pistas, mis ruedas creativas se ponen en marcha. Me encanta crear diferentes capas. Es algo con lo que estoy presionando para experimentar aún más en la nueva música que estamos escribiendo. A medida que nos desarrollamos musicalmente como banda, quiero que también se desarrollen las capas vocales y la experimentación.

Puede que en cada pueblo o ciudad la escena musical sea muy diferente, aquí en España es lo que sucede. Qué opinión tenéis de la escena de vuestra ciudad tanto en número de bandas, como en conciertos o en la llegada de giras.
- En cuanto a la escena aquí en New Hampshire y Nueva Inglaterra en general, está volviendo lentamente a lo que era a mediados de la década de 2000. Solíamos tener muchos lugares que ofrecían música en vivo y, en particular, bandas más pesadas. En los últimos 10 años, varios lugares cerraron o decidieron no reservar más bandas más pesadas (y algunos ya no reservan ninguna banda, independientemente del género). Y el Covid contribuyó a la desaparición de varios de estos lugares. Pero en el último año han aparecido más y más lugares nuevos que realmente apoyan la música en vivo, así que ha sido divertido verlo. Hay un LARGO camino por recorrer, pero va en la dirección correcta.

Hablando de conciertos ¿cómo ha ido la presentación del nuevo disco en directo?
- ¡Los conciertos han sido increíbles! La energía bruta que tenemos los cuatro en el escenario y nuestra química juntos nos ayuda a explotar con energía cuando subimos al escenario y la multitud se alimenta de eso.

Esta es una pregunta que me gusta dejar fija en las entrevistas para conocer más allá del papel del músico a quien está detrás de una banda. Siempre pregunto: ¿te gusta la lectura? ¿Cómics, novelas gráficas…?
- Me encanta leer. Soy un gran admirador de la literatura gótica sureña. Mi casa está llena de escritores como Flannery O'Connor y Ray Russell.

## INTERVIEW: DUST PROPHET ##

Those of you who already know us know that we take the issue with the interviews very calmly, but when we want to bring you a new one we do it with great enthusiasm. Here comes, in the middle of July and to endure this damn heat a little more (I'll never understand who can like summer), the interview with DUST PROPHET. We had announced this week when we published their last video. We leave you with what Otto Kinzel (Vocals/Guitar/Percussion) has told us.

What message do you want to leave written between the lines on a record so that the listener remains trapped and addicted to your music?
Otto: We want the listener to have our riffs and hooks stuck in their brain, so they have to hum our songs and jam out on them at full blast. I’m not sure there’s a specific message so to speak, but rather we just want the music and the songs to make an impact with the listener on an emotional level.

Of your album “One Last Look Upon the Sky” released at the end of January, what strong point do you highlight from the release? Each of you may have a different opinion.
- We are thrilled with the response we’ve gotten so far from the album’s release. We worked with Curtis and Cori from C Squared PR for the lead up to the release, and they did an amazing job. One of the moments we are most proud of is having the álbum debut at number 13 on the January Doom Charts. Considering it’s our debut release, and we released it completely independently (self-financed and self-released), this was a confirmation that people enjoy what we do. It felt great to see One Last Look Upon the Sky on the charts with several other incredible releases.

When was the moment, that second where the idea of creating DUST PROPHET began to form? I'm not talking about whether you were in another music band, I'm asking beyond the material life. I'm talking about the moment when the fire developed to start everything.
- Sarah (Wappler, bass/keyboards) & I started Dust Prophet in 2019 but it took a little while to get everything going. It wasn’t until COVID lockdown that we found Tyler (MacPherson, drummer) and finally got some momentum. Once Tyler was on board, we had a consistent lineup and started writing & recording. Jason (Doyle, guitar) came on board near the end of 2022. He initially was going to be our live guitarist but he brought such an incredible energy to the band that we knew we had to have him as a full-time member.

I think I read on your website that almost all of you already knew each other before you got together to bring DUST PROPHET to life. Were you in any other band, are you still in it or is DUST PROPHET the first?
- Sarah and I were in an industrial band several years ago. That’s how we initially met. When that project ran its course, we decided to try something different. She was really into riff-based music, like stoner & doom metal. So that was the genre we decided to focus on. We met Tyler through my friend Bob Dwyer, who played lead guitar on two songs on One Last Look Upon the Sky. We were looking for a drummer. We auditioned several individuals who simply couldn’t cut it. I was venting to Bob about how frustrating it was, and he just goes “hey, I know a guy who might be interested…”. He and Tyler worked together and he put me in contact with him.

- I played in a band with Jason over 10 years ago, another industrial-metal band. That project eventually broke up and Jason went into music production and engineering. When it came time to have someone mix & master the album, I reached out to him. We were very impressed with his work, and over the course of a year or so he naturally became more involved in the band. So, when we decided we needed another guitar play for the live shows he was the first person we asked.

What has been the easiest and the most complicated when it comes to composing the songs on the album?
- Complicated probably isn’t the right word, but the most challenging was multitracking different styles for the vocals. It was a challenge because I’m always trying to push myself. I want to always present different styles and voices for each song. Most of them I worked out in practice before tracking, but once I’m in the studio and have the chance to multi-track it gets my creative wheels going. I love coming up with different layers. It’s something I’m pushing to experiment with even more on the new music we’re writing. As we develop musically as a band, I want the vocal layering & experimenting to develop as well.

It may be that in each town or city the music scene is very different, here in Spain that is what happens. What opinion do you have of the scene in your city, both in number of bands, in concerts and in the arrival of tours?
- As for the scene here in New Hampshire & New England in general, its slowly coming back to what it was in the mid-2000s. We used to have lots of venues that catered to live music, and in particular heavier bands. Over the last 10 years various venues have either shutdown, or decided to no longer book heavier bands (and some no longer book any bands at all, regardless of genre). And Covid contributed to the demise of several of these venues. But in the last year there have been more and more new venues popping up that are really supporting live music, so that’s been fun to see. There’s a LONG way to go but it’s heading in the right direction.

Speaking of concerts, how has the live presentation of the new album gone?
- The live shows have been incredible! The raw energy the four of us have on stage and our chemistry together helps us explode with energy when we hit the stage and the crowd feeds off of that.

This is a question that I like to leave fixed in interviews to learn more about the role of the musician. I always ask: do you like reading? Comics, graphic novels…?
- I love Reading. I’m a huge fan of Southern Gothic literature. Writers like Flannery O’Connor as well as Ray Russell, that’s totally in my wheelhouse.
