Aquí somos así de especiales; o nada durante algunos meses o entrevistas muy seguidas. Hace muy poco "viajamos" a Estados Unidos. Ahora nos vamos un poco más cerca pero para el norte. Como diríamos: a la fresca durante todo el año comparado con España... Pues bien, hemos tenido la oportunidad de realizar una entrevista a una tormenta sónica, nunca mejor dicho... hablamos de DESERT STORM. Contesta el vocalista Matthew Ryan.


¿Qué esencia personal y mental podemos encontrar en el sonido de DESERT STORM?
- Matthew Ryan: La música de DESERT STORM te guía a través de un teatro de emociones que resonará de manera diferente para todos. Se construye mucho en torno a oleadas, picos y depresiones. Desde pasajes suaves hasta crescendo, para luego soltarse con algo que golpea. Recompensando al oyente atento, con capas aún por descubrir. Para contextualizar la música, nuestras letras proceden de un espacio muy personal. Experiencias personales, emociones personales, pensamientos. La sensación de control y poder contrastar con la vulnerabilidad y la desesperanza. Introspección, la tragedia de los sistemas culturales. Cinismo mórbido y abandono. El delgado velo entre fantasía y realidad.

Después de unos días de subidón tras lanzar “Death Rattle” con Apf Records, ¿Cómo os sentís y cómo ha sido la acogida del nuevo disco por parte de vuestros seguidores?
- M.R.: “Death Rattle” está a punto de cumplir un mes, pero la acogida ha sido absolutamente asombrosa. Una notable mejora con respecto a nuestros álbumes anteriores. Tanto por las amables palabras de nuestros fans como por las de los críticos, revistas y periódicos. Llevar el álbum de gira durante dos semanas por Europa y agotar las entradas te hace sentir muy bien. Se dicen cosas realmente maravillosas y estamos agradecidos a todos por el apoyo recibido hasta ahora. Lo único molesto es que todavía parece haber cierta confusión sobre nuestra alineación, que cambió en medio de la agitación mundial del coronavirus, pero no puedes enfadarte cuando alguien te canta sus alabanzas.

A finales de marzo se iniciaba “Death Rattle European Tour”. El mismo día que se lanzaba vuestro nuevo disco “Death Rattle”. Después de visitar muchísimas ciudades, ¿Qué nos podéis contar sobre la experiencia de un viaje así y cómo ha reaccionado el público con vuestros directos?
- M.R.: La reciente gira europea ha sido la más exitosa que hemos hecho. No es la más larga que hemos realizado, pero en términos de afluencia y volumen de ventas, ha sido increíble. Me sentí muy bien al volver a salir de gira y con la increíble respuesta del público, tanto en el foso como después en el bar. Las giras dan mucho trabajo, pero son muy satisfactorias y gratificantes. Toda esa privación del sueño, el tráfico, las colas, el acoso de las fuerzas fronterizas, las cargas a medianoche, todo desaparece cuando subes al escenario durante esa hora dorada.

Esta es una pregunta que me gusta dejar fija en las entrevistas para conocer un poco a la persona que hay detrás del músico. Siempre pregunto: ¿te gusta la lectura? Si es así, ¿lees libros en general, cómics, novelas gráficas…? Si estás leyendo o acabas de finalizar alguna lectura, ¿me podrías decir el título? ¿Alguna recomendación para los lectores?
- M.R.: Para ser sincero, no leo. El último libro que releí hace un par de años fue “Miedo y asco en Las Vegas”, porque me quemé mucho al sol en el extranjero y no podía nadar. Creo que también releí “La profecía celestina” esas mismas vacaciones, por la misma razón.

Ya son 16 años de DESERT STORM, imaginad que podéis tener una conversación con vuestro YO del pasado, aquel que quería iniciar una banda… ¿Qué le dirías, qué mensaje de apoyo le transmitirías?
- M.R.: Quiero que sepas que no todo el mundo tiene en cuenta tus intereses y que te van a estafar desde varios frentes. No le des más vueltas. Que se jodan los “Pay to play” y a los promotores que insisten en que pueden tirarte a la basura, díselo, o mejor, lucha contra ellos. Lo mismo vale para cualquiera que rece sobre “young” y "la nieve”. Diviértete y disfruta de la juventud. Las drogas no te definen, ni siquiera hacen que tu música de mierda sea mejor, maldito farsante. Solo mantente fiel a ti mismo (bostezo) y sigue haciendo lo tuyo.

Vuestro próximo concierto en la gira europea en el 20 de mayo en Londres. ¡Atentos a los seguidores que estéis en esa ciudad, no os perdáis el concierto! ¿Después de la gira presentación, qué le depara a DESERT STORM? ¿Un descanso para desconectar, más conciertos por confirmar, preparar nuevas ideas de futuro?
- M.R.: Acabamos de empezar la gira de este álbum. La gira de dos semanas ha sido un buen comienzo, pero tenemos que presentarlo por todo el Reino Unido y N.I. Tenemos que organizar algunos conciertos en Noruega a finales de año, lo cual me hace mucha ilusión. Seguramente habrá más conciertos por confirmar y ya hemos empezado a planear el de 2024. ¡Aunque los detalles se mantienen en secreto! Aquellos que nos estén leyendo y quieran vernos cerca de su casa, ¡que se den a conocer! Aunque nos encanta tocar en lugares y ciudades en lo que ya hemos estado antes, es igual de emocionante abrir nuevos caminos. Venid a vernos a un concierto, escuchad el nuevo álbum, y gracias por vuestro tiempo.

Llegamos al final de la entrevista, antes de nada dar las gracias a la banda por usar su tiempo con nosotros y en la rapidez en contestar esta entrevista. A Simon por la infinita paciencia. Hemos tenido unos meses muy complicados en lo personal. En Doom In Aeternum somos dos, desde hace mucho tiempo solo una persona se encarga de todo (Aquí Tania, ¡Hola!). Estamos intentando lanzar nuestro Fanzine, traer novedades a nuestra distribuidora Hecate Distro, etc... Han sido meses de mucho estrés personal y con el trabajo de Doom In Aeternum… Espero que hayáis disfrutado de la entrevista, y esperamos llamar la atención con ella para que nuevos seguidores disfruten de vuestro sonido. ## INTERVIEW: DESERT STORM ##

We are special like that here; either nothing for a few months or interviews very often. We recently "traveled" to the United States. Now we are going a bit closer but to the north. As we would say: cool all year round compared to Spain... Well, we have had the opportunity to interview a sonic storm, never better said... we are talking about DESERT STORM. Vocalist Matthew Ryan answers.

What personal and mental essence can we find in the sound of DESERT STORM?
- Desert Storm’s music guides you through a theatre of emotions that will resonate differently for everybody. A lot is built around swells, peaks and troughs. Building from soft passages to crescendo, and then releasing with something that slams. Rewarding the attentive re-listener with yet to be discovered layers. So to contextualise the music, our lyrics come from a very personal space. Personal experiences, personal emotions, thoughts. The sense of control and empowerment contrasted against vulnerability and hopelessness, bleakness. Introspection, the tragedy of cultural systems. Morbid cynicism and abandon. The thin veil between fantasy and reality.

After a few days of much emotions after releasing “Death Rattle” with Apf Records, how do you feel and how has the new album been received by your fans?
-Death Rattle is nearing one month in its infancy but the reception has been absolutely staggering. A noticeable marked improvement upon our previous albums. Both by the very kind words from our fans, but also from critics, zines, magazines, newspapers. Taking the album out on the road for two weeks around Europe and selling out, makes you feel pretty damn good. Some really truly wonderful things being said and we are thankful to everyone for the support thus far. The only irritation is that there still seems to be some confusion over our lineup which shifted amidst the global turmoil of coronavirus, but you can’t be mad when someone is singing your praises.

At the end of March the "Death Rattle European Tour" began. The day your new album “Death Rattle” was released. After visiting many cities, what can you tell us about the experience of a trip like this and how the public has reacted to your live shows?
-The recent European headline run has been the most successful we have done. It’s not the longest we have done but in terms of turnout and turnover, it was amazing. It certainly felt good to be back out touring properly and such an amazing response from the crowds, both in the pit and at the bar afterwards. Touring is a lot of work, but it is really satisfying and rewarding. All that sleep deprivation, traffic, queues, borderforce harassment, midnight loadouts, all drain away when you take to the stage for that golden hour.

This is a question that I like to leave fixed in interviews to get to know the person behind the musician a bit. I always ask: do you like reading? If so, do you read books in general, comics, graphic novels…? If you are reading or have just finished reading, could you tell me the title? Any recommendations for readers?
- To be honest, I don’t read. Last book I re-read a couple of years back, purely because I got severely sunburnt abroad and couldn’t swim, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”. Think I also re-read “The Celestine Prophecy” that same holiday, for the same reason.

16 years of DESERT STORM, imagine that you can have a conversation with your SELF from the past, the one who wanted to start a band... What would you say to him, what message of support would you send him?
- Know that not everyone has your best interest, and you will get ripped off from a few fronts. Don’t dwell on it. Fuck pay to play and promoters who push that can get in the bin, tell them, or better yet fight them. The same goes for anyone who prays on the young and nieve. Have fun and enjoy youth. Drugs don’t define you, they don’t even make your shitty music any better ya fuckin poser. Just stay true to yourself (yawn) and keep doing your thing.

Your next concert on the European tour: May 20 in London. Pay attention to the followers who are in that city, do not miss the concert! After the presentation tour, what is in store for DESERT STORM? A break to disconnect, more concerts to be confirmed, prepare new ideas for the future?
-We’ve only just started touring this album. The two week stint was a solid first start but we need to perform it across the UK and NI. Need to make arrangements for some shows in Norway at the end of the year which I’m super excited about. Certainly more concerts to be confirmed and we have already started plotting 2024, those details are tightly under wraps! To those who might be reading and want to catch us near you, then make yourselves known! As much as we love to play venues and cities which we have been to before, it’s just as exciting to break new ground. Come see us at a show, listen to the new album, loud, and thanks for your time.
