Interview in English

Hemos acortado a simplemente a "Subrosa."

En 2006, lanzasteis una Demo, “The Worm Has Turned”.

Tras un Ep (“Swans Trapped in Ice”) , aparece “No Help for the Mighty Ones”, lanzado a través de Profound Lore Records.
“No Help for the Mighty Ones”, dio un gran salto, y abrió más fronteras.

DOOM ON!
- Thank you very much for the interview.

Interview in English

With a thunderous and deep sound this band from Utah can show his fortress, where his music and his personal sound make of Subrosa to be inside of Sludge-Doom genre. With moments of perfect and dainty melodies, to brutality hoarse to previous explosion that carry us faraway worlds. For these reason from "Doom in Aeternum" we have the honour to do an interview to this band.

First of all, thanks so much for dedicate a little time to us. What can you say what is Subrosa? I don´t know if I´m in an error, but "Sub rosa" it means in latin "under the rose" it want to say "secret". Originative of Egyptian mythology and after Greek mythology isn’t it? What essence do you seek to the time of create?
- You’re welcome, and that’s right, “sub rosa” means “under the rose,” something secretive, covert or underground. Originally, Sarah came up with the idea for a name “Subrosa Blackbox Theatre,” but we decided it was too long. We shortened it to just “Subrosa.” We like the overtones of secretness and mysteriousness that that word suggests. We also like how the suffix “sub” denotes something low (subterranean, submarine, subwoofer), reflected in our down-tuned sound.

How is the scene of Doom and your music in Utah?
- The doom and heavy sludge/stoner scene in Salt Lake City is thriving right now. Subrosa just played at a local festival called Crucial Fest in June, and I saw many up-and-coming sludge bands and heard of several more that I want to check out: Huldra, Scalps, Die Off, and Settle Down, to name a few. There’s also Cult Leader and Day Hymns (both featuring members of ex-Gaza), INVDRS (the loudest band in Salt Lake City), Moon of Delirium, Eagle Twin (on Southern Lord Records), Dwellers (Small Stone Records), Old Timer, Light Black, La Verkin, and my personal favorite local band right now, Oxcross. There are many more bands in the Salt Lake City area who are making different incarnations of doom and avant garde black metal and all kinds of heavy music.

SUBROSA was founded eight years ago. How were these early moments, since the creation of band? Have had changes in the formation? Tell me a little about the history of your creation?
- I started Subrosa with my very dear friend Sarah in a haunted basement I lived in, during the summer of 2005. You ask about the early moments of Subrosa, and you know, ever since Subrosa started to the present day, it seems like I’m always stressing about something or other.(ndr: of course, no stop.) In those first 2-3 months, I remember feeling stressed that we couldn’t get anyone to join Subrosa in the Salt Lake music scene. So then I was stressed about writing songs and recording them on a little four-track I bought so we could have a demo to persuade people to join the band.

- Kim joined the band in 2008 when Sarah was vacationing in Europe for eight months with her boyfriend at the time. Kim was just filling in for Sarah while she was gone, but then when Sarah came back from Europe, we worked it out so they could both be in the band.

- The original drummer of Subrosa for three years was Bonie Shupe, but she moved to Colorado to go to college. Zach Hatsis and Dave Jones were the drummer and bassist for No Help for the Mighty Ones. Christian Creek and Andy Patterson joined Subrosa last year and are both on More Constant than the Gods. I think Andy’s and Christian’s style suit the heavy sound of the musical direction we’re going in, especially as it translates in live shows.

In your first jobs in 2006 you launch a Demo, "The Worm has Turned", and two years later your first full album, "Strega", with the label "I Hate". Eleven themes with a powerful music and a wonderful job, where your way prepares for many people speak about you. What do you remember for these moments before the launch? How was the reception to the fans?
- Wow, you are one of the few interviewers who remembers The Worm has Turned. It was a demo and a full-length album as well. So this makes More Constant than the Gods our fourth full-length album.

- What happened with Strega right before it launched is that I was in touch with Ola Blomkvist from I Hate Records. We had been friends for about a year, and he had told me repeatedly that he was sorry, but he could never release Subrosa on I Hate Records because they were a thrash and traditional doom label and there’s no way his partner would agree to sign Subrosa. So I sent him a copy of Strega after we finished recording it, just for him to listen to, like one friend would do for another. Without waiting for his response, I went ahead and paid $1,000 for Strega to be sent to a plant in the US to be pressed so we could self-release the album.

- Imagine my surprise when Ola came back to me two weeks after I sent him Strega and told me how much he loved the album and how he wanted to release it on I Hate, and then imagine how surprised I was when he was actually able to convince his business partner to release it. We got very, very lucky.
- Ola then had Magnus “Devo” Andersson, the bassist of Marduk, remix and remaster the album for its release on I Hate Records, and Ola redesigned the artwork with a lot of input from us.

- I called the plant to cancel my CD order here in the US, but they refused, because they of course already had my money! So now I have 1,000 Strega digipack CDs upstairs in my house in a closet with the old song order and without Devo’s excellent mixing and mastering job. But Sarah (Subrosa violinist) designed the CD artwork for that version of Strega, and I’ve always liked the job she did. The cover is magenta and deep red, with a seahorse door knocker on it.  I can mail you a copy if you’d like; nobody has it. (ndr: That would be great! Thank you!)

- I think Strega was well received in Europe on an underground level. It didn’t get quite the same exposure in North America.

After this first launch, how were the gigs?
- They were good after Strega. A few months after Strega came out, in the fall of 2009, we played some shows in Europe. We played Belgium, Germany, Budapest, Slovenia, Austria, and Dutch Doom Days in Amsterdam.

Speaking about the lyrics. Each theme has his history, his world and his final. Who make the lyrics, and what mean for you?
- I write most of the lyrics, although Sarah wrote the lyrics for the song “Strega” and the bridge for “Beneath the Crown.” You are right about the lyrics for each song having a kind of theme to them. I do see each song as having a thesis, whether it’s an overt idea I’m trying to communicate or a story. The lyrics of the songs are very important to me and I spend a lot of time labouring over them. The lyrics are often inspired by something I’ll hear or experience as I’m living my day-to-day life, something that elicits a lot of sadness or anger from me; a big emotional reaction. I’ll file that experience away in my mind and think, “I’m going to write a song about that one day.”

Before to talk your last album... Tell us a little about each of you. Behind of each sound, voice, riff, theme, there is a person and his history. Literature, art, cinema, voyages... Which is your inspiration to work, what is the reason for continue to go forward?
- I asked all the band members to answer this question but I wasn’t able to give them enough time, sorry, I will tell you a little about each member.

Sarah:Sarah is a dreamer and a visionary, she is very in touch with the “unseen world.” She loves art house and foreign films, reads voraciously and has great taste in everything. She loves David Lynch and is a big fan of Twin Peaks. She is very appreciative of the underground avant garde metal movement. She is an artist, and creates original artwork for a lot of our flyers.

Kim:Kim also loves art house and foreign films; the last film I watched with her was Incendies, which we both loved. Kim has been playing drums and violin in bands for the last 10+ years, and has toured the US for months at a time with the Salt Lake band Loom. One of Kim’s favorite authors is Cormac McCarthy and she just finished reading The Death of Bunny Munro by Nick Cave.

Christian:Christian has been in Subrosa since April 2012. Christian has his pulse on the underground music scene, and is constantly telling the rest of us about bands of all genres that we need to check out. He is the one who introduced me to Admiral Angry, Mars Red Sky, Wreck and Reference, and many more. Christian also seems to like all the kinds of movies we do, and he lent me his book, The Folk of the Fringe, by Orson Scott Card, a few months ago.

Andy:Andy has been a local music producer in Salt Lake City for the last 10 years, and has recorded, mixed and mastered several hundred local and national albums. Andy has his roots in punk, hardcore and metal and has a wide taste in music. Andy and his wife host a barbeque for the Fourth of July every year, and the entire Salt Lake music scene descends on his house that night; usually several hundred people coming and going throughout the evening. The barbeque has become legendary and is an example of Andy’s ability to connect with people and connect them to each other.

Rebecca:One of my favorite authors is Cormac McCarthy. I also love art house/independent films. My favorite thing to do is read, but I hardly ever get the time to do it. I also like to write fiction, but again, haven’t had the time to do it in awhile. I have a garden and really need to weed it right now. (ndr: as they say in "castellano", "remove the bad grass"). Tonight I made a corn succotash from a zucchini from my garden and fed my roommates with it, and after finishing this interview, I’m going to read House of Leaves for awhile.

After the Ep "Swans Trapped in Ice", appears "No help for the Mighty ones" launch by Profound lore records. This album with a shattering density, a spiritual sound in many moments, thunderous musicality, and his perfection to join several worlds in one. Can you say how was the performing to this great album?
- Thank you, I think Sarah, Kim and I have gained a lot of confidence on stage since No Help came out, and when we perform these songs now, we are able to express ourselves on stage more. I always try to focus my attention in the 60 seconds before every show, with my head down, trying to remember that I want to help the audience connect to the music that many of them have already heard on vinyl or CD many times. We all take live shows more seriously now, and strive to make sure the audience can feel the emotion of the music as we perform it.
"No Help for the Mighty Ones" gave a great leap, and open your frontiers. I suppose that was accepted with enthusiasm between the followers of genre. How are being the gigs? Will we see you some time in Europe and more exactly in Spain?
- We would love to make it to Europe. We have put our name in for Roadburn, but have not been accepted yet. If we do get into Roadburn, we’d like to do a European tour and of course, we’d like to play in Spain this time around! (ndr: Here you have many followers.)

-The gigs since "No Help" have had more interest and attendance. It does seem like since it came out, interest in it has spread slowly but steadily. It was strange to go to Vancouver in April and have a bunch of people in the audience that I’d never met singing along to the songs we performed off "No Help".

I think know that it is working in a new album. Can you tell us any thing?
- Well, I started writing the very first riffs for the album on a piano, on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2011. I really began to focus on finishing writing all the songs on the album in a condensed period of about four or five months, from September 2012-January 2013. That’s when about 90% of the material on the album was written.

- The album will come out on Sept. 17, 2013, on Profound Lore Records. I can tell you that the theme of the album is death; almost all the songs deal with death, either overtly or indirectly. The girl on the front cover of the album, drawn by Glyn Smyth, is a personification of death; as you can see, she’s not scary, but beautiful and mystical. The intent was to portray death as a tender deliverer.

Well, I loved do this interview, and thank you so much for answer it. From this blog we send you a great hug and good luck!! Greetings!! DOOM ON!!!!
- Thank you very much for the interview. Pues, gracias!

(ndr: Thank you, Rebecca, and all the band, by make good music to our ears and to our souls. It this is called an interview from head to toe, from someone who lives the music as it should be lived.)
