Desde Nueva York, aterriza en Doom In Aeternum, una banda que acapara atrocidad y pureza en su sonido, a partes iguales. Cuando la suciedad inunda nuestros ojos y la vida se despedaza lentamente, cada trozo de piel se esfuma como la misericordia y el perdón. Ellos están en el ocaso de la muerte, donde el amanecer se vuelve negro, las estrellas colapsan el cielo como bolas de fuego y, sólo pueden arrastrar el rastro de humo sobre las cabezas sincronizadas, en silencio, con los ojos ensangrentados y una sonrisa perfecta. Estaríamos horas, horas escribiendo de una manera específica mientras escuchamos a esta banda… y es que, en exclusiva, y tras unos días desde el lanzamiento de su trabajo, hemos podido hablar con los americanos HAAN. Así que… no tardéis demasiado en seguir hacia adelante.

Ante todo, muchas gracias por responder a nuestras preguntas. Muchos proyectos, necesitan puntos de apoyo fundamentales sobre los que edificarse. Asimismo, se necesitan pautas que pongan en orden el resultado de una idea. ¿Es este el caso de HAAN? ¿Cuáles han sido los cimientos sobre los que habéis levantado vuestra banda?

- Dave: Gracias por recibirnos. Jordan (guitarra), Chris (batería) y yo (Dave, bajo) comenzamos a tocar juntos a principios de 2012. Hemos tocado con diferentes personas y alrededor de un año, estuvimos experimentando con diferentes sonidos. Cuando Chuck (voz) se unió en la primavera de 2013, finalmente todo tuvo sentido y pudimos desarrollar algo que nos dio una sensación satisfactoria y de "acuerdo" con nosotros.

- Chuck: Nunca nos propusimos alcanzar cualquier visión específica con nuestra música. Empezamos a escribir juntos de varias formas, pero acabamos decidiendo mantener el material que nos parecía más natural para nosotros. Cada miembro tiene una historia musical muy diferente, por lo que como colectivo, acabamos de aterrizar en este sonido. No era un estilo premeditado.

¿Piensa HAAN en un motivo para existir? Hablamos desde la perspectiva del “mensaje” que deseáis ofrecer o desde las palabras que ya están escritas y no compartís con el mundo donde vivimos. ¿Existe HAAN para reflejar o para destruir?
- Chuck: En referencia al "mensaje" de nuestra música, creo que no tenemos un mensaje definitivo. Líricamente, hay que ejecutan temas e imágenes repetidas, pero no hay una historia específica que se cuente. La intención es crear un estado de ánimo. Los tonos e imágenes, y cómo se cantan, es mucho más que una línea de narración del pensamiento. Con todo esto que tu preguntas, si nuestra intención era "reflejar o destruir", y yo diría que son ambos. La creatividad se basa en la experiencia de los creadores. Por lo tanto, las canciones tienden a tener un tono sombrío y negativo, pero eso es totalmente reaccionario al mundo en que vivimos. Si el mensaje es visto como destructivo, es sólo destructivo hacia las ideas e instituciones que deben ser destruidas.

- Dave: El nombre significa el resentimiento, el odio, la desesperación y el dolor, específicamente hacia un agresor o una injusticia sufrida. Ese tema es fundamental para lo que creamos - una reacción al mundo en que vivimos, que es en sí brutal y destructivo.

Muchas bandas se caracterizan por un sonido permanente, sin descanso. Otros, como puede ser vuestro caso, dejan algunos espacios donde pueden aliviar su descontrol, respiran, vuelven a respirar y siguen con su brutalidad. Así nos referimos a los distintos momentos donde el sonido es más tranquilo, más apaciguado, y en otros la canción, la voz, los instrumentos rugen con rabia. ¿Todo esto es porque lo quisisteis hacer a propósito o apareció sin querer?
- Dave: Nunca hemos establecido ninguna regla para nosotros mismos, aparte de que todo lo que hacemos, debemos sentirlo como una emoción y como una satisfacción puramente dicha. A menudo, su significado, lleva a la creación de algún tipo de arco que conduce al oyente a diferentes lugares dentro de la misma canción. A veces eso significa simplemente, crear un ritmo y golpear tan duro como sea posible durante unos minutos. Cada canción promueve presentar retos y soluciones.

- Chuck: La variación en nuestras canciones a veces es intencional y otras veces no. Todos tenemos la tendencia a favorecer la música con mucho groove y empuje, encontrándose a menudo, en lugares no convencionales. Utilizamos una gran cantidad de acoples como instrumento. Creo que siempre debe haber picos y valles.

Observando los temas que componen “Sing Praises”, todos muy buenos y muy adictivos, nos hemos fijado, porque somos muy curiosos y nos pica demasiado, es como se titula uno de ellos. O al menos la mitad: “Pasture / Abuela”. Sabemos que es una pregunta un poco de cachondeo, pero nos gustaría conocer la historia del motivo de ese título. ¿Hay algo detrás de ello?
- Chuck: “Pasture and Abuela” son realmente dos canciones separadas. Nos gustó la forma en que ambas nos hacen sentir cuando se tocan en conjunto, por eso mismo las fusionamos. El título de “abuela” surgió y se extrajo libremente del folclore Navajo (Ndr: Quiere decir que el titulo lo sacaron a raíz de una historia que existe dentro de la cultura de los Navajos y añadiendo lo que nos explican a continuación). Hay un personaje llamado “Grandmother Spider” (Abuela Araña) que básicamente creó el universo; tejió una telaraña en el cielo y las estrellas, no son más que el rocío sobre su tela. Elegí nombrarlo 'Abuela', porque creo que el español es una lengua más atractiva que el inglés. De lo contrario, habría sido llamado "Grandmother"... y no es tan musical.

Desde hace unos años, la tecnología informática se ha instalado en los estudios de grabación. Eso puede parecer bueno, pues la calidad aumenta en cuanto a producción y sonido en general. Nosotros también pensamos que esto es bueno, aunque contrariamente, parece que muchas bandas hayan perdido esa “esencia” que destilaban las bandas de antaño. Las ganas, la fuerza y la expresividad sustituían a la tecnología y los medios... ¿Estáis de acuerdo?

- Dave: Creo que es cuestión de lo que funcione mejor para cada artista. Para HAAN, la única manera de la que nos gusta trabajar es con equipación analógica. Cuando grabamos, sólo queremos capturar nuestro sonido tocando en vivo con la mayor precisión posible, y con un mínimo de trucos de estudio y doblajes.

“Sing Praises” fue grabado por Andrew Schneider. Él tiene una impresionante colección de equipos analógicos vintage, pero todo se introduce en ProTools para la edición. Esto permite lo mejor de ambos mundos - la música es capturada de manera orgánica, pero podemos utilizar el ordenador para realizar el proceso de edición más rápido y más fácil.

- Chuck: No sé si la tecnología realmente arruinó la esencia de la música rock. Hay fantásticos álbumes grabados y, a menudo realizados en su totalidad en el ámbito digital. Creo que el dinero es el problema - que siempre ha sido y será. La música es por desgracia un negocio - y cuando existe el deseo monetario, la creatividad siempre se pierde. La búsqueda de la riqueza ha llevado a infinidad de canciones y grabaciones que no llevan a nada. Sobre-saturan el paisaje con menudencias sin sentido, y desvían toda la autenticidad que conforma el arte. Existen aquellos que realmente se preocupan y aquellos que quieren ser ricos y famosos. Esto es válido para todo.

¿Qué significado tiene para todos vosotros la palabra "música"?
- Dave: La música es lo que el músico o el oyente quiere que sea. Es una experiencia totalmente personal.

Chuck: La música no es realmente definible. Esto significa algo diferente para cada uno. Es como preguntar "¿Qué es el arte?"

Preguntas rápidas:
¿Realismo o imaginación? – Realismo
¿Individualismo positivo o colectivo negativo? – Colectivo negativo
¿Camino recto o camino con bifurcaciones? – Bifurcaciones
¿Música o sonido? – Sonido

Tras este kit-kat (así somos), hemos visto, saboreado, disfrutado y sobre todo escuchado, un estupendo álbum. Sabemos que el futuro no está escrito, aunque nos gustaría saber si… ¿Estáis pensando en realizar algún nuevo trabajo? Aunque esa idea sea un pensamiento muy lejano.
- Dave: Sí, por supuesto. Este verano hemos grabado un nuevo conjunto de canciones. La mezcla y masterización será este otoño. Esta grabación se llevará a cabo (será lanzada) en la primavera de 2017. También hemos estado trabajando en nuevas canciones.

- Chuck: Estamos siempre escribiendo. Ese es nuestro objetivo principal como banda.

“Sing Praises” está disponible en Europa a través del sello finlandés Kaos Kontrol. Podemos dividir el proceso de creación-evolución de un álbum: el inicio donde las ideas vuelan de la mente a los instrumentos. Más tarde realizar un proceso de grabación y dar el último toque a un nuevo disco, plasmando el nombre de un sello, tanto nacional como internacional. ¿Os ha supuesto un gran esfuerzo a la hora de poder distribuir vuestro trabajo en el continente viejo?
- Dave: Jukka de Kaos Kontrol ha sido un gran apoyo para nuestro trabajo. Hemos sido una banda completamente autosuficiente hasta este punto - financiamos todas las grabaciones, creamos la grabación y hacemos toda la promoción nosotros mismos. Kaos Kontrol tiene una red internacional de distribuidores, por lo que será interesante ver la reacción de la gente, cuando vuelva a oír el disco.

Estados Unidos es un país muy grande, suponemos que de un lugar a otro pueden existir muchas diferencias en cuanto a gustos musicales, entre tantas cosas, el ambiente de los conciertos. Sea si has asistido como público o actuando, tanto en pueblos como en ciudades… ¿Piensas que existe una diferencia en la esencia del público, opinando desde las dos perspectivas?
- Dave: Creo que si tú estás interesado en escuchar una música desafiante, sin importar el estilo, se puede encontrar de una manera, ya sea desde el otro lado del país o del mundo que está justo enfrente. Nunca hay una escasez de cosas interesantes para escuchar. Ya se trate de los Estados Unidos o España, el medio ambiente y la vida del artista da forma a lo que crean. Las herramientas como Spotify o Bandcamp ofrecen una forma más fácil de experimentar una variedad más amplia de las cosas, pero siempre se absorbe y se filtrarán a través de la experiencia de ese artista.

Y por último, ¿Tenéis pensado hacer alguna gira europea? Sea cual sea la respuesta, para una ‘banda no grande’ (banda que no tiene los bolsillos repletos de billetes verdes), ¿es difícil poder hacer una gira, más o menos larga, por europea?
Dave: Nos encantaría recorrer Europa, aunque no estoy seguro de cuándo podría ocurrir. Tenemos la intención de tocar fuera de Nueva York, y una gira más en América del Norte en 2017, una vez que el próximo disco salga.

= INTERVIEW IN ENGLISH =

From New York, lands on Doom In Aeternum, a band that capture the atrocity and purity in their sound, equally. When the dirt flood our eyes, life slowly falls apart and in each piece of skin mercy and forgiveness disappears. They are in the twilight of death, where the dawn turns black and the stars in the sky collapse as fireballs, can only drag the trail of smoke on the synchronized heads in silence, with bloodshot eyes and a smile side. We could write for hours in a specific way as we listen to this band... in exclusive we spoke with HAAN. So ... do not delay to move forward.

First of all, thank you very much for answering our questions. Many projects need critical support points on which edify. Also, guidelines put in order the result of an idea are needed. Is this the case HAAN? What have been the foundation upon which you have raised your band?

- Dave: Thank you for having us. Jordan (guitar), Chris (drums) and I (Dave, bass) began playing together in early 2012. We played with different people and experimented with different sounds for about a year. When Chuck (vocals) joined in Spring 2013, it finally make sense and we developed something that felt satisfying and “right” to us.

- Chuck: We never set out to achieve any specific vision with our music. We began writing together in various ways, but ended up keeping the material that came most natural to us. Each member has a vastly different musical history, so as a collective, we just landed on this sound. It wasn't a premeditated style.

Do you think HAAN a reason to exist? We speak from the perspective of the "message" that wish to offer or from the words that are already written are not sharing with the world in which we live. Is there HAAN to reflect or to destroy?
- Chuck: In reference to the 'message' of our music, I don't think we have a definitive message. Lyrically, there are running themes and repeated imagery, but there isn't a specific story being told. The intention is to create a mood. The images and tones, and how they're sang, is much more of a train of thought than storytelling.

With all of that being said, you asked if our intention was to "reflect or destroy", and I would say both. Creativity is based off of the experience of those who are doing the creating. So, the songs tend to have a bleak and negative tone, but that is entirely reactionary to the world we live in. If the message is seen as destructive, it's only destructive toward ideas and institutions which need to be destroyed.

- Dave: The name means resentment, hatred, despair and grief, specifically towards an aggressor or an injustice suffered. That theme is central to the what we create - a reaction to the world we live in, which is itself brutal and destructive.

Many bands are characterized by a permanent sound, without rest. Others, such as your case, leave some spaces where they can alleviate their lack of control, breathe, breathe again and continue their brutality. So we refer to the different moments where the sound is quieter, more appeased, and others, song, voice, instruments roar with rage. All this is because they were willing to do on purpose or inadvertently appeared?
- Dave: We never set any rules for ourselves, other than whatever we make should feel exciting and satisfying to us. That often means creating some type of an arc that takes the listener to different places within the same song. Sometimes that means just creating a rhythm and beating it as hard as possible for a few minutes. Each song presents it’s own challenges and solutions.

- Chuck: The variance in our songs is sometimes intentional and often not. We all tend to favor music with a lot of groove and punch, but that is often found in unconventional places. We use a great deal of feedback as an instrument. I think there should always be peaks and valleys.

Observing the songs that make "Sing Praises", all very good and very addictive, we have set, because we are very curious, it is like the title of one of them. Or at least half "Pasture / Abuela". We know it is a question a little joke, but we would like to know the history of the reason for that title. Is there anything behind it?
- Chuck: Pasture and Abuela are really two separate songs. We liked the way they both felt when played together, so we merged them. As far as the title of Abuela goes, it's loosely based off of Navajo folklore. There is a character called Grandmother Spider who basically created the universe; she spun a web in the sky, and the stars are merely dew upon her web. I chose to name it 'Abuela' because I think Spanish is a more attractive language than English. Otherwise it would have been called 'Grandmother'...not quite as musical.

For a few years, computer technology has been installed in the recording studio. That may sound good, as the quality increases in production and overall sound. We also think that this is good, though contrary, it seems that many bands have lost that "essence" that distilled the bands of yesteryear. The desire, strength and expressiveness replaced the technology and media... you agree?

- Dave: I think it’s up to the artist and what works best for them. For HAAN, analog equipment for recording is the only way we like to work. When we record, we just want to capture the sound of us playing live as accurately as possible with minimal studio tricks and overdubs. Sing Praises was recorded by Andrew Schneider. He has a really impressive collection of vintage analog gear, but it all fed into ProTools for editing. This allows the best of both worlds – the music is captured organically, but we can utilize the computer to make the editing process quicker and easier.

- Chuck: I don't know if technology really ruined the essence of rock music. There are fantastic albums recorded and often performed entirely in the digital realm. I think money is the problem - it always has and will be. Music is unfortunately a business - and where there is monetary desire, creativity will always perish. The quest for wealth had led to infinite songs and records that amount to nothing. Over-saturating the landscape with meaningless fluff, and siphoning all authenticity from the art form. There are those who really care and those who want to be rich and famous. That goes for everything.

What does it mean for all of you the word "music"?
- Dave: Music is whatever the musician or listener wants it to be. It’s a completely personal experience.

- Chuck: Music isn't really definable. It means something different to everyone. It's like asking "What is art?"

After this kit-kat (so are we), we have seen, savored, enjoyed and especially heard a great album. We know that the future is not written, although we would like to know... Are you thinking about making a new work? Although an idea of a distant thought.
- Dave: Yes, absolutely. This summer we recorded a new set of songs and will be mixing and mastering it this Fall. That record should be out in Spring of 2017. We’ve also been working on new songs.

- Chuck: We are always writing. That is our main focus as a band.

"Sing Praises" is available in Europe via the Finnish label Kaos Kontrol. We can divide the process of creation-evolution of an album: where ideas start flying of mind to instruments. Later perform a recording process and put the finishing touches to a new album, reflecting the name of a label, both nationally and internationally. Do you have a great effort when to distribute your work on the old continent?
- Dave: Jukka from Kaos Kontrol has been very supportive of our work. We have been a completely self-sustaining band up to this point – we fund all the recordings, create the artwork and do all of the promotion ourselves. Kaos Kontrol has an international network of distributors, so it will be interesting to see the reaction once more people hear the record.

United States is a big country, we assume that from one place to another can be many differences in musical tastes, among many things, the atmosphere of the concerts. Be if you attended as a public or acting, both in the towns and cities ... Do you think there is a difference in the essence of the public, reviewing from the two perspectives?
- Dave: I think if you are interested in hearing challenging music, no matter what the style, you’ll find a way, whether it’s from across the country or acoss the world. There’s never a shortage of interesting things to listen to. Whether it’s the United States or Spain, the artist’s environment and life shapes what they create. Tools like Spotify or Bandcamp make it easier to experience a wider variety of things, but it is always absorbed and filtered through that artist’s experience.

And finally, do you plan to do a European tour? Whatever the answer, for a 'no big band' (band that does not have pockets full of money), it is difficult to do a tour, more or less long, for Europe?
- Dave: We’d love to tour Europe, although I’m not sure how soon that could happen. We plan to play outside of New York and tour much more in North America in 2017 once the next record comes out.
